Proposal 2026-2

A proposed initiated law to prohibit campaign contributions from certain regulated utilities and government contractors and apply campaign finance laws and regulations to additional types of political communications. (Detailed language is long: find your ballot here and go to the bottom to see state and local proposals where you live.)

1.Why is this on the ballot? A citizen-led ballot initiative petition succeeded in gathering enough signatures. In plain language, people were concerned that some public utilities were allowed to make campaign contributions to the regulators who decide on things like rate increases. 2. Who is in favor of this proposal? GENERAL ELECTION 2026

Proposal 2026-1

A proposal to convene a constitutional convention for the purpose of drafting a general revision of the state constitution.

Shall a convention of elected delegates be convened in 2027 to draft a general revision of the State Constitution for presentation to the state’s voters for their approval or rejection?

Editorial comments:

1.The Michigan Constitution of 1963 has been updated or amended with 39 changes, some by ballot proposals such as the notorious Proposition 3 of 2022 which effectively legalized abortion in Michigan. A Constitutional Convention ("Con Con") is one way to maybe remove that atrocity. To this editor, that possibility alone is enough reason to vote YES.

2. Unlike the Convention of States, a nationwide effort to amend the US Constitution under Article V, the process for the Con Con is spelled out clearly in the Michigan Constitution Article XII section 3 and the delegates are chosen by we the people, not by legislators.

3. Scare tactics exist, such as telling us that we might lose our gun rights, which under the current Michigan Constitution are some of the clearest in the country:

Every person has a right to keep and bear arms

for the defense of himself and the state.

If we lose that during a Con Con, remember that we still have the US Constitution's Second Amendment: not as clear but very "tested".
